Fire Rekindle Destroys 8 Apartments In Chesterfield Indiana

Chesterfield, IN - East Madison Fire Territory and other area fire companies quickly extinguished a structure fire on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at the Skyview Apartments in Chesterfield, IN. At approximately 5:42 PM, Madison County Central Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a kitchen fire at 48 Skyview Drive in Chesterfield, IN. East Madison Fire Territory and mutual aid

departments were dispatched along with Chesterfield Police Department. Chesterfield Officer D. Pollard and K. Lugar arrived on the scene and reported Apartment H was on fire with heavy flames and began immediately evacuating residents of the neighboring apartments.

Residents from 8 individual apartments were evacuated from building #48. When fire crews arrived on the scene, they marked the fire a working structure fire and crews immediately began an aggressive interior attack. Crews were able to contain the main part of the fire to Apartment H, Apartment G, and the attic area. Apartment E and F both had heavy water and smoke damage. The remaining apartments in the unit (4 apartments) sustained smoke damage. The common hallway and firewall stopped the fire from spreading south to 4 adjacent apartments in the unit.

Medical crews on the scene checked on two residents who complained of smoke inhalation but refused to be transported to the hospital. One Chesterfield Police Officer was transported to the hospital after suffering a minor medical emergency on the scene. The police officer was treated and released from a local hospital. A firefighter was treated and released on the scene for a minor hand injury. There were no other reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. All pets were able to be evacuated from the apartments and they did not suffer any injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 1-800-Board-Up was contacted to come to the apartment complex to board up the building to secure the apartment complex. Residents who were displaced from their apartments were assisted by the American Red Cross with temporary shelter.
